the asylum designed g. w. vivian , j.j. clark (at time vivian s assistant), adapting vivian s initial designs similar buildings in kew , beechworth. building commenced @ kew (kew lunatic asylum), ararat , beechworth (beechworth asylum) @ same time, ararat completed first. building of ararat contracted o grady, glynn , o callaghan , not patients (or inmates called) many erroneously believe. asylum built town within town own market gardens, orchard, vineyards, piggery , other stock kept on grounds. @ height had on 500 staff , stands today complex made of 63 buildings ranging in age original wings built in 1860s modern forensic unit built in 1991 - 2 years before facility closed. despite being closed asylum facility continued house female prisoners during building/renovation of dame phyllis frost centre right until current management took on in 2001.
