the first church on site founded doge giustiniano participazio in 9th century house body of saint dedicated, gift of byzantine emperor leo v armenian, contains under second altar on right. remains of various doges buried in crypt of church. original church rebuilt in 1170s (when present campanile built) , replaced gothic church in 15th century. remains of building still stand, present church built beside , not on it.


the present church built between 1458 , 1515. antonio gambello original architect, started building in gothic style, upper part of facade arched windows , columns, , upper parts of interior completed mauro codussi in renaissance style seventy years later. facade harmonious venetian mixture of late-gothic , renaissance styles.
