from 1954? – 1957 fighter squadrons @ bruggen 67, 71e, 112 & 130, equipped canadair sabre f.4s, later re-equipped hawker hunters. these squadrons either redeployed or disbanded in 1957 arrival of 87 squadron, equipped gloster javelins.
the initial strike capability @ raf brüggen provided english electric canberra summer of 1957. 1969 1975 phantom fgr.2 operated in strike/attack role , replaced sepecat jaguar 1975. squadron jaguars replaced panavia tornado gr.1 beginning in 1984. total of 4 tornado gr.1 squadrons @ brüggen, , 2 more @ nearby sister airbase raf laarbruch, brüggen , laarbruch formed largest tornado force in nato. hardened aircraft shelters equipped u.s. weapon storage security system (ws3), each able store 4 we.177 tactical nuclear bombs, delivery tornado aircraft.
1984 – nuclear incident
on 4 september 2007, british military admitted there had been accident nuclear weapon @ raf brüggen on 2 may 1984. nuclear weapon fell transport truck, missile wasn t securely attached truck. weapon 8 times more powerful bomb dropped on hiroshima in 1945. casing x-rayed after incident, , found have been undamaged, testament inherent strength of nuclear weapons casings. 6 people responsible accident, received reprimand actions in incident.
