october 22, 2005 @ u.s. cellular field in chicago


playing in first world series home game since 1959, white sox took lead home run jermaine dye in first inning. sox scored 2 more in second when juan uribe doubled in a. j. pierzynski after carl everett had scored on groudout earlier in inning. astros responded again in next inning when lance berkman hit double, driving in adam everett , craig biggio. in white sox half of fourth, joe crede hit turned out game-winning home run. in bottom of eighth, scott podsednik hit triple pierzynski on second. roger clemens recorded shortest world series start, leaving after second inning 53 pitches including 35 strikes, due sore hamstring had injured (and caused him miss last regular season start) loss went wandy rodríguez. josé contreras pitched 7 innings, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits win, , bobby jenks earned save give white sox 1-0 lead in series. when neal cotts entered game in top of 8th marked first time in 5 games white sox had gone bullpen.

on miserably cold (51 degrees) , rainy evening, morgan ensberg s first-pitch home run off starter mark buehrle put astros on top in second inning. white sox answered in bottom of second 2 runs of own off andy pettitte. lance berkman drove in 3 runs in game, 2 of them on go-ahead double in top of fifth. in seventh inning, dan wheeler loaded bases double juan uribe, walk tadahito iguchi, , home plate umpire jeff nelson s ruling jermaine dye hit pitched ball. ruling considered questionable, television replays showed ball hit dye s bat (which have made pitch foul ball rather hbp). astros brought in chad qualls, promptly served grand slam paul konerko on first pitch threw, eighteenth grand slam in annals of fall classic. in top of ninth, white sox closer bobby jenks blew save when gave two-run game-tying pinch hit single josé vizcaíno. in bottom half of ninth, astros closer brad lidge gave one-out, walk-off home run — fourteenth in series history — scott podsednik, giving lidge second loss in many post-season appearances (his previous appearance in game 5 of 2005 national league championship series). podsednik had not hit single homer in regular season, , second of postseason. series moved houston white sox leading 2-0.

game 3 first ever world series game played in state of texas. before game, ruled commissioner bud selig retractable roof open @ minute maid park, weather permitting. astros objected, citing record in games roof closed better retractable roof open. selig s office claimed ruling based on rules established houston , consistent how astros organization treated situation year long, weather forecasts period of time.


in game – longest world series game in length of time (five hours , forty-one minutes) , tied longest in number of innings (fourteen, tied game 2 of 1916 world series) – lance berkman singled 1 out after craig biggio lead-off double in bottom of first astros struck early. white sox had rally snuffed in top of second inning; after paul konerko hit lead-off double , a. j. pierzynski walked, aaron rowand hit line-drive double play. adam everett caught ball , doubled konerko off second flipping ball biggio, stepped on bag. houston scored in bottom of third when everett led off walk. everett got caught in rundown , got hit ball on juan uribe throwing error hit everett. roy oswalt sacrifice bunt , biggio single sent everett home. berkman singled again 2 out, sending biggio third. morgan ensberg singled biggio home third run of game. jason lane led off astros fourth home run left-center field. later shown in replays ball should not have been ruled home run, hitting left side of yellow line on unusual wall in left-center field.


the white sox rallied in top of fifth, true win or die trying mantra of 2005, starting joe crede lead-off homer. uribe, on first after hitting single, scored on tadahito iguchi base hit 1 out, followed scott podsednik coming home on duck-snort single jermaine dye. pierzynski hit two-out double tal s hill, driving in 2 runs, scoring iguchi , dye giving white sox lead. astros rallied in last of eighth 2 outs when lane s double scored ensberg tying run after back-to-back walks ensberg , mike lamb, giving dustin hermanson blown save. houston tried rally win in ninth, stranded chris burke @ third, after had walked, reached second on error , stolen third.


the astros tried again in tenth in eleventh, failed each time. in top of fourteenth, after sox hit spectacular double play started ensberg, geoff blum (a former astro) homered right 2 outs off ezequiel astacio. after 2 infield singles rowand , crede went total of 150 feet according mccarver, uribe walked, , chris widger walked astacio s sudden wildness. astros tried rally tying runs on first , third , 2 outs after uribe error, game 2 starter mark buehrle earned save winning pitcher dámaso marte when everett popped out, bringing white sox 1 game closer first world championship in eighty-eight years. buehrle became first pitcher ever start game in series, , save next one.


many records set or tied in game besides time , innings: teams combined use seventeen pitchers (nine white sox, 8 astros), throwing total of 482 pitches, , walking twenty-one batters combined (a dozen chicago, 9 houston); forty-three players used (the white sox used twenty-two , astros used twenty-one), , thirty men left on base (fifteen each team), new high-water marks in categories in fall classic history. scott podsednik set new all-time record 8 official-at-bats in game. 1 record tied double plays turned, 6 (four astros, 2 white sox).

before game, major league baseball unveiled latino legends team.


the fourth game pitchers duel had been promised throughout series. both houston starter brandon backe , chicago starter freddy garcía put zeros on scoreboard through 7 innings, longest since game 7 of 1991 world series. scott podsednik had two-out triple in top of third, tadahito iguchi grounded out second, snuffing threat. astros had best chance of scoring in sixth, jason lane struck out bases loaded end rally. white sox had chance in top of seventh runners @ second , third , 2 out, shortstop juan uribe struck out snuff rally. white sox able break through in next inning against embattled houston closer brad lidge. willie harris hit pinch-hit single. podsednik moved harris second sacrifice bunt. carl everett pinch-hit iguchi , grounded out right side allow harris move on third. jermaine dye, valuable player of series, had game-winning single, driving in harris.


things got little sticky sox in astros half of eighth when reliever cliff politte hit willy taveras, threw wild pitch, sending taveras second, , walked lance berkman. after morgan ensberg flew out center, chisox manager ozzie guillén brought in neal cotts finish inning. cotts induced pinch-hitter josé vizcaíno ground out uribe. bobby jenks, 24-year-old fireballer, started ninth inning. allowed single jason lane , sacrifice bunt brad ausmus. chris burke came in pinch-hit; fouled 1 off left side, uribe made amazing catch in stands retire burke.


the game ended when orlando palmeiro grounded uribe. bang-bang play paul konerko caught ball uribe @ 11:01 p.m. cdt begin biggest celebration in chicago since sixth nba championship bulls in 1998, , end second-longest period without world series title (the cross-town chicago cubs owned longest such streak @ time, had not won since 1908, until winning in 2016). 1-0 shutout first 1-run game end world series since 1995 world series, in game 6 won atlanta braves on cleveland indians, , first 1-0 game in series game since game 5 of 1996 world series when new york yankees shut out braves in last game ever played @ atlanta–fulton county stadium.
