the memorial shrine, known akshar deri, erected @ spot of gunatitanand swami’s final rites in gondal, gujarat.


on 16 september 1867, gunatitanand swami paid homage murti of swaminarayan in junagadh mandir last time , departed tour of neighboring towns , villages having served mahant 40 years 4 months , 4 days. leaving, declared, “i reside in mahuva,” assumed baps followers means passing of spiritual torch bhagatji maharaj lived in mahuva , not reference physical destination. travelled through villages of ganod, upleta, bhayavadar , vanthali before arriving @ gondal celebrate religious festival @ behest of madhavji dave, town administrator. gunatitanand swami visited navlakha palace maharaja of gondal donated piece of land swaminarayan mandir. gunatitanand swami returned swaminarayan mandir in gondal @ 9pm , died @ 12:45am on 11 october 1867. obsequies performed next day on banks of river gondali abhaysinh darbar of ganod, disciple of gunatitanand swami, later built shrine @ spot of final rites known akshar deri.


on 23 may 1934, despite severe financial difficulties, shastriji maharaj consecrated murtis of swaminarayan , gunatitanand swami in central shrine of new, three-shikar mandir built above akshar deri, multitudes of people around world visit akshar mandir each year , circumambulate akshar deri (perform pradakshina) seeking peace of mind , fulfillment of auspicious desires, making 1 of visited places of pilgrimage in region.
