the ground first broken in 1912 first of 2 large buildings located on gifford street @ cost of $50,000. r. j. reidpath, architect, of buffalo, new york, prepared plans. building 200 feet (61 m) 150 feet (46 m) , had 30,000 square feet (2,800 m) of floor space. new structure adjoined main factory building , devoted chiefly production of sundry parts.
a second building planned following year, 1913, , constructed next gifford street building. both buildings built of steel , brick , considered modern , fireproof. built accommodate repair shop, blacksmith shop , first chassis testing room.
during time, franklin employed 1,300 men, however, departments working until 9:00 pm. sales had grown 40 percent since 1911 , major growth , expansion anticipated.
