construction

the construction of camp nou started on 28 march 1954 barcelona s previous stadium, camp de les corts, had no room expansion. although planned called estadi del fc barcelona, more popular name camp nou used. june 1950 signing of lászló kubala, regarded 1 of barcelona s greatest players, provided further impetus construction of larger stadium.


the architects francesc mitjans , josep soteras, collaboration of lorenzo garcía-barbón.

in may 1972, camp nou hosted first european cup winners cup final between rangers , dynamo moscow. rangers won match score of 3–2. 1970s marked turning point barcelona signing of new player, johan cruyff, in 1973. electronic scoreboards installed in stadium 2 years later.


the stadium underwent expansion in 1980, in anticipation of 1982 fifa world cup, added boxes, vip lounges, new press area, new markers , construction of third tier, smaller in height original design 6 metres (46.60 metres compared original design of 52.50 metres). expansion of stadium added 22,150 new seats, taking total seating capacity 71,731, , standing capacity expanded 16,500 49,670, taking total stadium capacity (seated , standing combined) 121,401. fc barcelona s record attendance set on 5 march 1986 in european cup quarter-final against juventus in front of 120,000 spectators, 1,401 shy of stadium s capacity.


camp nou 1 of several stadiums used throughout 1982 world cup, hosting inauguration ceremony on 13 june. hosted more matches in tournament of 16 other stadiums used on spain, including opening match, traditional opening ceremonies took place (including releasing of dove). in front of 95,000, belgium upset defending champions argentina 1–0 in opening match. hosted 3 round-robin matches between soviet union, poland, , belgium, poland ended winning , qualifying reach semi-finals, played italy @ camp nou, losing 2–0; italy went on win final match, played @ real madrid s santiago bernabéu stadium in madrid.

the stadium’s capacity has varied on years, opening @ 106,146, growing 121,749 1982 fifa world cup.


apart hosting barcelona, camp nou home catalan national team. stadium used other football events. european cup final between milan , steaua bucurești held on 24 may 1989, italian club winning 4–0. camp nou hosted part of football competition, including final, in 1992 summer olympics. in preparation these matches, 2 additional tiers of seating installed on previous roof-line.


camp nou underwent little change after 1982, except opening of club museum in 1984. stadium underwent facelift in 1993–94, in pitch lowered 2.5 metres (8 feet), security gap separated lawn galleries removed, , standing room eliminated in favor of individual seating. new press box, renovation of presidential grandstand , boxes, new parking under main grandstand, , new lighting , sound systems completed in time 1998–99 season. in 1999, uefa outlawed standing sections in stadiums, , camp nou’s capacity settled current level. stadium hosted 1999 uefa champions league final later year manchester united played bayern munich. united won 2–1, coming 0–1 down in injury time.


during 1998–99, uefa rated camp nou five-star stadium services , functionalities. however, per 2010 regulations, uefa not publish list of top venues.


in 2000, fans polled concerning stadium s name. of 29,102 votes club received, total of 19,861 (68.25%) preferred camp nou estadi del fc barcelona, , official name changed popular nickname.


the facilities include memorabilia shop, mini-pitches training matches, , chapel players. stadium houses second-most visited museum in catalonia, fc barcelona museum, receives more 1.2 million visitors per year.


on 1 october 2017, barcelona s league match against las palmas played in empty camp nou due political turmoil in region.
