following yeoman s retirement, houston hired jack pardee program s sixth head coach. pardee former nfl all-pro linebacker had held head coaching positions chicago bears, washington redskins , usfl s houston gamblers. pardee brought him run & shoot offense , young offensive coordinator named john jenkins. run & shoot offense pass-oriented system called throwing ball on downs , in situation. cougars become 1 of top offensive teams in country during run & shoot years.


in 1987, pardee s first season, team struggled in adjusting new system scored 60–40 home upset of texas longhorns on way 4–6–1 finish. 1988 season saw great improvement in aspects of team play cougars posting 9–3 mark, finishing 2nd in southwest conference standings. team played in aloha bowl fell 24–22 washington state. cougars offense led quarterback andre ware, had been recruited uh bill yeoman veer-option quarterback. uh finished 1988 regular season @ no. 18 in ap poll.

after 1989 season, pardee hired head coach of houston oilers , jenkins named successor. pardee era @ uh had been successful period in cougar football since late 1970s. program enjoyed consistent success on field, , helped usher in explosion of passing offense in college football. cougars prolific offense , andre ware s heisman trophy raised program level of national recognition had perhaps never enjoyed before. pardee later considered returning head coach cougars after art briles left program, passed on in favor of kevin sumlin. pardee had not coached since 1995.
