for many millennia, great plains of north america inhabited nomadic native americans. 16th century 18th century, kingdom of france claimed ownership of large parts of north america. in 1762, after french , indian war, france secretly ceded new france spain, per treaty of fontainebleau. in 1802, spain returned of land france, keeping title 7,500 square miles.

in 1803, of land modern day kansas acquired united states france part of 828,000 square mile louisiana purchase 2.83 cents per acre. in 1848, after mexican-american war, treaty of guadalupe hidalgo spain brought united states or part of land ten future states, including southwest kansas. in 1854, kansas territory organized, in 1861 kansas became 34th u.s. state.
