in 1948, there 4,500 inhabitants, farmers, in umm al-fahm area. after 1948 arab–israeli war, lausanne conference of 1949 awarded entire little triangle israel, wanted security purposes. on 20 may 1949, city s leader signed oath of allegiance state of israel. following absorption israel, town s population grew rapidly (see box). 1960, umm al-fahm given local council status israeli government. between 1965 , 1985, governed elected councils. in 1985, umm al-fahm granted official city status.
in october 2010, group of 30 right-wing activists led supporters of banned kach movement clashed protesters in umm al-fahm. many policemen , protesters injured in fray.
