some books use pe̍h-ōe-jī, including textbooks, dictionaries, bible, poetry, , academic works


most native southern min speakers in taiwan unfamiliar poj or other writing system variety, commonly asserting taiwanese has no writing , or, if made aware of poj, considering romanization low form of writing, in contrast high form (chinese characters). introduced poj alongside han-lo , chinese character-based systems, clear preference has been shown all-character systems, all-romanization systems @ bottom of preference list, because of preexisting familiarity of readers chinese characters.


poj remains taiwanese orthography richest inventory of written work, including dictionaries, textbooks, literature [...] , other publications in many areas . 1999 estimate put number of literate poj users @ around 100,000, , secular organizations have been formed promote use of romanization among taiwanese speakers.


outside taiwan, poj used. example, in fujian, xiamen university uses romanization known bbánlám pìngyīm, based on pinyin. in other areas hokkien spoken, such singapore, speak mandarin campaign underway actively discourage people speaking hokkien or other non-mandarin varieties in favour of switching mandarin instead.


in 2006, taiwan s ministry of education chose official romanization use in teaching southern min in state school system. poj 1 of candidate systems, along daighi tongiong pingim, compromise system, taiwanese romanization system or tâi-lô, chosen in end. tâi-lô retains of orthographic standards of poj, including tone marks, while changing troublesome ⟨o͘⟩ character ⟨oo⟩, swapping ⟨ts⟩ ⟨ch⟩, , replacing ⟨o⟩ in diphthongs ⟨u⟩. supporters of taiwanese writing in general suspicious of government involvement, given history of official suppression of native languages, making unclear whether tâi-lô or poj become dominant system in future.
