this nightjar small , short-tailed white corners tail, golden nape , collar, dark cheeks , white patches on sides of throat. crown grey , breast finely barred in brown. males have more white on tail while female more heavily streaked on crown. differentiated sykes s nightjar dark undertail , jerdon s nightjar shorter tail , white patches on sides of throat.


the call distinctive , has been likened stone skipped on frozen lake or ping-pong ball bouncing rapidly , coming rest.


it flies after sundown easy, silent moth-like flight. during day, indian nightjar lies still on ground, concealed plumage; difficult detect, blending in soil.
