the football team of club in 1906.


the football team took part in primera división championships since 1909, when squad won second division title, therefore promoting top division. gimnasia played in primera 1910 1917 when team relegated división intermedia (second division) after finishing 20th of 21 teams. club disaffiliated association later, although football has remained 1 of sports practised present days.


in 1912, gimnasia y esgrima part of first break in argentine football, due conflict caused position of club sales of tickets football matches. gimnasia stated members should not pay tickets because of membership, allowed them take part of activities, including free access stadium. club claimed higher percentage of income tickets sold. conflict persisted until gimnasia decided disaffiliate association on july 14, 1912, establishing new league, federación argentina de football , presided ricardo aldao himself.


other clubs followed gimnasia y esgrima joining new league, such porteño, estudiantes de la plata, independiente, , other teams second division. new league organized own championships 1912 1915, when both leagues merged asociación argentina de football , putting end conflict.

the club s stadium (which has capacity of 18,000 spectators) field argentina national team played home games since 1910, making debut during copa centenario revolución de mayo held there. in final match of tournament, played against uruguay, riot occurred after suspension of match announced, , part of grandstands –made of wood– destroyed fire. after stadium rebuilt, many football games held there, when gimnasia had disaffiliated association.


in 1920 gimnasia y esgrima disaffiliated football associations of argentina organise own championships. 1928 gye had more 120 members 8 teams formed. ten years later there more 400 members registered play football. because of growth of activity, club built 1 field more.


after leaving official football leagues in decade of 1920, rugby union 1 of predominant sports of gimnasia y esgrima, winning torneo de la urba titles of 1911 , 1912. club won 2 more titles in 1932 , 1939, last championship date. gimnasia y esgrima plays in grupo ii, second division of unión de rugby de buenos aires league system.


in 1942 president aldao moved club s distinguished guest apartment, establishing permanent home. condition required aldao live there payment of monthly rent 6% of investments made club when apartment built. in 1947 , after 40 years president of institution, aldao resigned due afraid of possible intervenction of argentine military government in club.


gimnasia has gained reputation in women s field hockey due successful campaigns during decade of 2000, having won 7 torneo metropolitano titles, 6 of them consecutively being last in 2012.


on september 2014, rugby union senior squad returned first division (grupo i) after defeating manuel belgrano 23-16 @ playoffs (zona reubicación). team had been relegated in 2007.
