the basic son ensemble of 20th-century havana consisted of guitar, tres, claves, bongos, marímbula or botija, , maracas. tres plays typical cuban ostinato figure known guajeo. rhythmic pattern of following generic guajeo used in many different songs. note first measure consists of offbeats. figure can begin in first measure, or second measure, depending upon structure of song.
