the new york segment of us 9 can divided section south of albany, parallels hudson river closely; , portion north of albany, takes in long section of eastern adirondacks. new york state bicycle route 9 follows us 9 corridor, diverging route in areas not conducive bicycling. example, bicycle route 9 follows us 9w in northern new jersey , rockland county, crosses bear mountain bridge, , follows ny 9d , ny 301 us 9 in putnam county.

us 9 enters new york part of expressway, becoming surface street , major urban , suburban artery. outside of expressway portions, two- or four-lane road save lengthy four-lane strip leads 1 of expressways. runs near river more in southern areas, never far inland.

the concurrency between us 1 , us 9 began in new jersey ends @ first exit i-95 on george washington bridge, when 9 heads north via 178th , 179th streets broadway. broadway passes through washington heights neighborhood , inwood, northernmost neighborhood on island. region in 9 passes through has large latino immigrant population. northernmost section of new york city subway s underground ind eighth avenue line (a train) runs along broadway between dyckman street , inwood–207th street terminal. on corner of 204th street dyckman house, original farmhouse left in manhattan , national historic landmark.


near island s northern tip, @ intersection 215th street, elevated irt broadway–seventh avenue line (1 train) of new york city subway joins broadway. @ tip of manhattan, past columbia university s lawrence a. wien stadium, route 9 crosses harlem river ship canal via broadway bridge, marble hill, portion of manhattan on mainland. marble hill metro-north station here first of several along route 9.



us 9 runs under elevated irt broadway–seventh avenue line in bronx.


at or south of 230th street, 9, still broadway, enters bronx. draws alongside i-87, here major deegan expressway, first of many encounters between 2 roads on northward course. @ 242nd street station, subway ends , broadway runs along west side of van cortlandt park. henry hudson parkway interchange mile stretch adds ny 9a 9.


westchester county

the northwestern corner of park marks city limit , 9 enters yonkers, known south broadway. trends closer hudson river, remaining busy urban commercial street. in downtown yonkers, drops close river, becomes north broadway , 9a leaves via ashburton avenue. 9 climbs nearby ridgetop runs parallel river , railroad, few blocks east of both passes st. john s riverside hospital. neighborhoods become more residential , road gently undulates along ridgetop. in yonkers, route 9 passes historic philipse manor house, dates colonial america.


it remains broadway leaves yonkers hastings-on-hudson, splits separate north , south routes 0.6 miles (1.0 km). trees become taller , houses, many separated road stone fences, become larger. national historic landmark, john william draper house, site of first astrophotograph of moon.


in next village, dobbs ferry, route 9 has various views of hudson river while passing through residential section. route 9 passes old croton aqueduct , nearby shopping district of village. after intersecting ashford avenue, route 9 passes mercy college, turns left again @ center of town past south presbyterian church, headed equally comfortable ardsley-on-hudson , irvington. villa lewaro, home of c.j. walker (1867-1919), first african-american millionaire, along highway here. @ north end of village of irvington, memorial writer washington irving, after whom village renamed, marks turnoff home @ sunnyside. entering southern portion of tarrytown, route 9 passes historic lydhurst mansion, massive mansion built along hudson river built in 1800s.

north of here, @ kraft foods technical center, tappan zee bridge becomes visible. after crossing on thruway , i-87, here concurrent i-287, , intersecting four-lane ny 119, 119 splits off east, 9 becomes busy main street of tarrytown. christ episcopal church, irving worshiped, along street. many high quality restaurants , shops along main road. downtown ends @ eastern terminus of ny 448, 9 slopes off left, downhill, , 2 signs indicate 9 turns left, passing old dutch church of sleepy hollow, nhl. road enters sleepy hollow (formerly north tarrytown), passing visitors center kykuit, national historic landmark (and partially still is) rockefeller family s estate. route 9 passes historic sleepy hollow cemetery, includes resting place of washington irving , setting legend of sleepy hollow.


us 9 expands 4 lanes @ trumpet intersection ny 117; broadway ends , 9 becomes albany post road. entering ossining s downtown, us 9 becomes highland avenue , continues rise , fall, widen , narrow, through riverside community. route 9 passes in close proximity sing sing correctional facility before heading towards croton.


croton expressway

just after ossining, route 9a returns , merges us 9 approximately 1,500 feet (457 m) crosses mouth of croton river , becomes 9.2-mile (14.8 km) croton expressway. section built of cancelled i-487, highway built interstate standards. 9a leaves freeway , returns 2 lanes, following parent route s old course, @ first exit, croton point avenue in croton-on-hudson, ny 129 reaches western end. here modern concrete ramps of metro-north s croton–harmon station, served amtrak, prominent west haverstraw bay becomes visible. route 9 passes indian point energy center, nuclear power-plant supplies power westchester county , new york city. facility visible majority of northern half of expressway.



the annsville circle, north end of three-u.s. route concurrency.


the expressway veers inland of route, preferring follow railroad tracks (the new cortlandt station visible west @ 1 point), rather river past promontory @ buchanan. ny 9a, surface street, ends @ parent @ welcher street exit. continues on reconstructed, widened section through peekskill. despite recent upgrades freeway standards, northern end of highway still maintains lower 45-mile-per-hour (72 km/h) speed limit.


1 mile (1.6 km) freeway s northern terminus, us 202 , us 6 join freeway. ny 35 reaches western terminus @ same junction. four-lane divided highway s northern terminus @ stoplight @ three-way intersection bear mountain state parkway. parkway continues straight intersection while 6/9/202 turns left , crosses annsville creek.


peekskill poughkeepsie

the van wyck homestead, key continental army supply depot during revolutionary war.


550 feet (168 m) north of junction, routes enter annsville traffic circle. while 6 , 202 remain concurrent , exit circle on west side, continuing river towards bear mountain bridge, 9 exits roundabout on northeast side. continues due north two-lane albany post road. running inland , free of development behind hudson highlands, enters putnam county. ny 403 reaches eastern terminus @ same intersection appalachian trail crosses road. gas station here has, when in service, long been favorite stop thru-hikers. few miles further north, @ indian brook road intersection, highway passes through nelson s corner, rare surviving 19th-century country hamlet. old albany post road, 6.6-mile (10.6 km) remnant of route 9 s original , 1 of oldest dirt roads still in use in country, comes in right mile on. other intersection of note in putnam county main east–west state route, ny 301, crosses 9 several miles further north, mile south of dutchess county line.


us 9 passes dutchess mall, dead mall, , historic van wyck homestead before meeting i-84 in fishkill. @ interstate exit, road expands four-lane strip similar form takes in central new jersey, complete commercial development on both sides. remain way poughkeepsie. stretch important, if congested, transportation artery county.


just north of i-84, 9 clips off corner of village of fishkill, intersection ny 52 creates heavily congested situation @ rush hours since traffic going southbound 9 westbound i-84 uses shortcut. remaining miles wappingers falls boast many intersections well, not quite heavy.

in town of poughkeepsie, after northern terminus of ny 9d, 9 passes distressed mall, south hills , healthier, newer counterpart, poughkeepsie galleria. mile further north, ny 113 swings west @ cloverleaf interchange near ibm plant, once region s major employer. entering city of poughkeepsie, @ sharon drive, 9 returns expressway status once again. 2 miles (3.2 km) north of sharon, highway connects us 44/ny 55 concurrency @ interchange in close proximity mid-hudson bridge. creates unusual left exits, traffic 44/55 east wanting go north on 9 routed u-turn south of highway, , likewise northbound drivers on 9 must turned around go west on river. limited-access highway comes end @ intersection ny 9g near marist college.


poughkeepsie albany

springwood, home of franklin d. roosevelt


north of poughkeepsie, 9 @ first busy four-lane undivided route, occasional turn lanes approaches hyde park, passing marist college, main campus of culinary institute of america , home , presidential library of native franklin d. roosevelt. narrows 2 lanes @ built-up area marks center of town, opens turn lane traffic entering third of town s tourist attractions, vanderbilt mansion national historic site.


past hyde park, road narrows 2 lanes again traffic becomes more local. area recalls westchester county many wooded tracts , stone walls @ roadside. through here has been running close river, after staatsburg highway begins veer inland again. land west, between road , river, forms hudson river historic district, largest in country , national historic landmark. route 9 @ least 2 miles (3 km) east of river when reaches rhinebeck, next town along route, ny 308 heads off east, , close old rhinebeck aerodrome aviation museum.


at weys corners, x-shaped intersection north of rhinebeck, northbound traffic river , kingston–rhinecliff bridge via ny 199 typically bears left onto ny 9g. southbound traffic, in turn, takes 199 river when 2 meet in red hook 3 miles (5 km) further ahead. 2 blocks north of junction village diner, named halfway diner since halfway along route 9 new york city albany, , elmendorph inn, mid-18th century counterpart diner. north of red hook, land around road begins open farms , fields, offering frequent views of catskill escarpment across river. terrain continues columbia county, 9 enters 5 miles (8 km) beyond red hook.

the road remains 2 lanes, local traffic , no stop signs or traffic lights, until oblique four-way intersection in bell pond, 10 miles (16 km) county. here, ny 23 joins 9 heads west, in turn joins ny 9h on northern roadway while ny 82 departs southeast. 1.5 miles (2.4 km) west, in greenport, 9 turns northward again toward hudson, county seat, passing st. lawrence-owned cement plant expansion blocked community activists after 2 contentious years.

on east fringe of hudson s historic downtown, us 9 intersects northern terminus of ny 9g , ny 23b. route 23b runs concurrent 9 short distance eastward before splitting @ fairview avenue, us 9 follows out of hudson. commercial strip turn lane gives way after 1.75 miles (2.82 km) lightly traveled rural two-lane 9 north of hudson. near stockport, route 9 meets southern terminus of ny 9j. farther north, after passing through kinderhook, home of u.s. president, martin van buren, road passes under ny 9h @ grade-separated interchange before intersecting northern terminus of 9h short distance later outside valatie. when developer wanted add fifth leg intersection new shopping center, state department of transportation required developer convert signalized intersection roundabout, despite heavy local opposition.

the highway widens 4 lanes turn lane shortly after crossing renesslaer county, , remain of rest of way albany, despite limited development , low traffic in areas. within mile of county line passes under new york state thruway berkshire connector , meets lone section of i-90 in new york not part of thruway system, @ exit 12 southeast of castleton-on-hudson. 4 miles (6 km) north of i-90 , 4 miles (6 km) northwest of nassau, route 9 veers left merge us 20 in schodack center, , progress northwest toward albany. less 0.5 miles (0.8 km) eastern terminus of overlap, 9 , 20 intersect ny 150 before connecting i-90 @ exit 11.


as roadway heads westward, meets western (southern state purposes) terminus of us 4 across hannaford supermarket along busy commercial strip in east greenbush. shortly afterwards first sign of state capital, erastus corning tower, starts becoming visible. @ bluff east of river, entire albany skyline comes view road descends, passing northern terminus of ny 9j south of rensselaer. routes 9 , 20 cross hudson river via dunn memorial bridge albany corning tower , other buildings of empire state plaza loom ahead, , 2 routes separate, 20 heading west across city.


albany , northward

north of albany, us 9 starts pull away hudson corridor, picking i-87, adirondack northway.


albany saratoga springs

after bridge, route 9 runs under i-787 several blocks, takes offramp past albany pump house become clinton avenue. there intersects 2 routes have paralleled 9 west side of hudson. @ pearl street , palace theatre, crosses ny 32 (north pearl street), continues north, , us 9w (lark street), ends @ junction. route 9 turns north on henry johnson boulevard , widens cross i-90 again via flyover built canceled mid-crosstown arterial, exiting city of albany in process.



us 9 briefly merges i-787 after crossing dunn memorial bridge in albany.


just before reaching northern suburb of colonie, 9 returns 2 lanes , follows loudon road through well-to-do residential neighborhoods past albany memorial hospital , wolferts roost country club. short ny 377 forks off north while route 9 trends westward. five-way intersection marks loudonville. siena college in newtonville on east side mile past junction, colonie town hall opposite.


continuing northward latham, highway adds middle turn lane. ny 155 intersects northway draws near west. beyond, road expands 4 lanes , commercial property resumes. @ latham circle 9 crosses beneath ny 2. mile further north, expressway portion of route 7 crosses on eastbound traffic, , ny 9r goes off east, return 2 miles (3 km) further north. @ junction, 9 starts trend eastward again, away northway, , crosses mohawk river saratoga county via crescent bridge @ northernmost point of albany county.


a new name, halfmoon parkway, comes change of county, after town road runs through. eastward bent reverses state route, ny 236 forks off north. time 9 reaches ny 146 junction in clifton park, northway right alongside again. roads continue running parallel courses past round lake ny 67 joins 9 malta, leaving 1.6 miles (2.6 km) later @ center of town own exit along northway. 1.5 miles (2.4 km) north, lettered subroute of us 9, ny 9p, leaves east saratoga lake.



downtown saratoga springs


route 9 has first exit northway, first junction i-87 since tarrytown in fact, 2 miles (3 km) north of 9p. full cloverleaf main exit saratoga springs. resort town s historic downtown 4 miles (6 km) ahead, past saratoga spa state park , congress park. here 9, south broadway, begins concurrency ny 50 and, later, briefly, ny 29. 9p completes loop here, , lettered route, ny 9n, longest letter-suffixed route in state, begins @ post office. tacking eastward out of town, 9 , 50 follow van dam street until 9 returns northerly course on marion avenue, becomes maple avenue @ city limit.


saratoga springs lake george

once past sleeve of development around highway north of city, 9 leaves albany metropolitan area gets less developed through wilton , moreau. palmerstown range begins rise on 1 side, anticipating mountainous country come. hamlet of kings station onward, signed saratoga road follows straight northeast course 10 miles (16 km) through more wooded countryside entrance moreau lake state park. mile further on, 9 again intersects northway @ exit 17.


another 1.5 miles (2.4 km) brings western end of ny 197 (reynolds road). us 9 continues straight ahead next 3 miles (5 km) village of south glens falls, ny 32 (gansevoort road), comes in @ oblique angle south , merges 9 cross hudson via cooper s cave bridge last time, leave saratoga county , enter warren county city of glens falls.


the 2 routes follow glen street centennial circle, five-legged roundabout in center of city s downtown area, 32 leaves right via warren street , ny 9l takes ridge street due north. 9 continues via glen northwest, becoming upper glen street @ city limit. ny 254 (aviation road) comes in nearby western terminus @ northway. highway remains heavily developed next 3 miles (5 km) junction route beginning @ i-87, ny 149. joins us 9 briefly before leaving east north of adirondack–lake george outlet mall. many vehicles make turn, 149 best route northway southern vermont, 30 miles (48 km) east.


route 9 continues parallel interstate. @ queensbury-lake george town line, massive wooden shingle lets drivers know have crossed blue line adirondack park. route straightens out next 2.5 miles (4.0 km) village of lake george, popular tourist destination.


it takes name canada street, , ny 9n comes in west run concurrently with. 2 routes widen busy four-lane road past shops catering busy tourist trade. shortly thereafter, ny 9l loops parent route, after having followed east shore of lake gives village name. @ northern end of village of lake george, 9n splits via lake shore drive follow western shore, , 9 takes northwesterly turn remain parallel northway.


adirondack park

past lake george, route 9 enters adirondack park. next 90 miles (145 km) of route 9 run through eastern section of largest protected area east of mississippi, 6,100,000 acres (24,690 km) vast tracts of forest preserve kept forever wild per state constitution. accordingly, 9 remains two-lane rural road, close adirondack northway, section of interstate 87, throughout park. development, traffic , population minimal, surrounding land heavily wooded , 2 roads cover long distances between small towns.


after lake george, there exit northway, ease access village southbound traffic. us 9 remains close northway on east side, resulting in exit 4 miles (6 km) north. serves warrensburg, ny 418 reaches eastern terminus. highway begins move further away interstate, , 3 miles (5 km) further, ny 28 concludes long bow-shaped route @ junction 9.


nearly 9 miles (14 km) north, @ chestertown, route 9 meets , joins ny 8, carries due west 4 miles (6 km) loon lake. after crossing on southwestern bay of lake, 9 turns right , once again on own, trending northeast alongside lake s western shore reach northway again in 4 miles (6 km). exit serves northbound traffic. mile later, there access other direction.


the road begins run along west shore of schroon lake, in process crossing essex county. shortly after county line, access road leads i-87 again. 7 miles (11 km) here, past hamlet of schroon lake @ water s northern tip, 9 intersects ny 74, 254 , 149 fresh off western terminus @ northway. signs @ junction use ticonderoga, 17 miles (27 km) east, control city, indication of how sparsely populated park is.


9 remains close interstate next 16 miles (26 km) town of north hudson, boreas road provides access dix mountain wilderness area southernmost in adirondack high peaks region. highway again crosses interstate connect i-87 western terminus of ny 73, well-traveled scenic route keene valley , lake placid. @ ornate junction, 9 @ 1,155 feet (340 m) above sea level, highest elevation reaches along entire length.


the right turn takes again northeast past rocky peak ridge , giant mountain wilderness area, hamlet of new russia. 10-mile (16 km) stretch brings highway elizabethtown, unincorporated county seat , first settlement 9 has passed through since warrensburg. ny 9n comes through town west; , us 9 briefly overlap.


while land remains forested road continues northeast course elizabethtown, begins descend valley of lake champlain draws near. 9 draws close northway again @ poke-o-moonshine mountain, adirondacks popular climbing spot. in chesterfield, 18 miles (29 km) without major highway junction ended when ny 22 joins 9 after exit, first pairing of 2 highways begin journey upstate in new york city.


the 2 routes enter keeseville, in mid-village cross ausable river , enter clinton county. ny 9n reappears here, reaching northern terminus. north of village, 2 routes split again , exchange roles had been playing entire northward journey. 9 takes eastward fork lake, running close state s edge; while 22 run inland here border.


after keeseville, 9 follows ausable chasm down lake shore. crosses ausable , briefly re-enters essex county long enough short ny 373 provide access burlington–port kent ferry. third , final crossing takes out of adirondack park.


lake champlain, plattsburgh , canada

after 9 passes ausable marsh wildlife management area , ny 442 comes in east @ small hamlet of peru, 9 heads down shore of lake itself, stay close way plattsburgh lakes locks passage. on clear days possible see burlington across water. ahead lies valcour island. in narrow, rocky strait between , shore, benedict arnold s hastily built fleet held off british on october 11, 1776 in battle of valcour island in considered first battle in u.s. naval history. more recent military history apparent shortly thereafter when 9 passes now-closed plattsburgh air force base, pillar of regional economy plattsburgh has struggled replace.

when enters plattsburgh, becomes first u.s. avenue, peru street when passes old catholic cemetery. saranac river draws alongside twice before 9 takes left turn @ bridge street , crosses it. past bridge, highway turns left again onto city hall place @ center of town. route 9 passes in front of city hall designed john russell pope, builder of jefferson memorial in washington. 2 more quick lefts follow past large obelisk of riverside park, onto miller , cornelia streets, , 9 turns right @ eastern terminus of lengthy ny 3 follow margaret street north , out of city.


it bends northeast return lake shore shortly after city limit, following alongside cumberland bay. @ dead creek crossing, 9 widens 4 lanes first time since albany area handle heavy traffic @ junction eastern terminus of ny 314, continues east county route 57 ferry connector, southeast of northway. 2 miles (3 km) north of junction, after north country shopping center, highway returns 2 lanes , name lakes locks passage overlooks woodruff pond , treadwell bay. i-87 visible thousand feet (305 m) east across many open fields 2 roads parallel each other s turns closely.


another short route, county route 58, formerly ny 456, comes in west , terminates @ 9 shortly after right turn point au roche state park. continuing northward, road deviates east in town of chazy, returns previous track interstate @ little chazy river bridge. shortly afterwards, 9 intersects county route 23 (miner farm road, formerly ny 191 west of 9).


route 9 runs straight due north, no longer taking name, 3 miles (5 km) next major intersection, ny 9b (lavalley road), last sub-route. 9b not terminate instead runs lake-shore , north rouses point. bend west, closer northway, brings next 3-mile (5 km) stretch 9 s last major intersection, us 11, south of champlain.


us 9 winds through quiet border village main street, turning west-northwest near champlain s northern boundary make last water crossing on chazy river. route, still known main street, heads northwest towards northway follow last 0.5 miles (0.8 km), passing few customs brokerages towards official end @ on-ramp last exit. traffic canada must on i-87 here.


the roadway continues east service road, unsigned ny 971b, 0.46 miles (0.74 km). former route of us 9 border prior construction of northway. devoid of development save long vacant , abandoned lots, ending in parking lot 400 feet (120 m) south of border canadian customs station @ south end of autoroute 15 visible.
