sailing cairo, illinois, on 17 february 1863, curlew joined admiral david dixon porter s fleet patrol , convoy duty in mississippi river , tributaries. had occasional skirmishes enemy on shore, including during expedition union army troops on 2 june 1863 engage confederate troops on arkansas shore near island no. 67 , island no. 68.


from 12 20 july 1863 curlew joined other vessels expedition red river, black river, tensas river, , ouachita river during captured steamer louisville ], 1 of finest mississippi river packets, , steamer elmira ’, , destroyed stores, 2 smaller steamers, large sawmill, , 30,000 feet of lumber.


service on ohio , tennessee rivers

curlew served in ohio river , tennessee river 23 december 1863 until 14 january 1864, when arrived @ mound city, illinois, repairs.


she sailed on 12 march carrying party u.s. coast survey survey of grand gulf, mississippi, returning mound city on 31 may. on 24 may had heavy engagement 12-gun battery @ gaines landing, arkansas, during struck several times.

curlew stood down mississippi river again on 30 june 1864 , cruised between natchez, mississippi , vicksburg, mississippi, having several encounters enemy land forces. on 24 october sailed river patrol ohio river , tennessee river.


from february 17 june 1865 curlew conducted surveys in river around cairo, illinois, , mound city, illinois.
