following indian rebellion of 1857, british east india company s ruling ended , british crown took direct control of region in 1858. dacca municipality (later dhaka city corporation) established on 1 august 1864. @ time area of dhaka 20.72 square kilometres population of around 52,000.


in 1885 railway line between dhaka , narayanganj built. mymensingh connected dhaka in 1889.


lord curzon arrived dhaka in 1904 , established curzon hall. in july 1905 decided take effect partition of bengal. dhaka became capital of new province, eastern bengal , assam, on 16 october 1905. joseph bampfylde fuller entered on office in dhaka first lieutenant-governor of region in january 1906. partition revoked in 1911 , dhaka became district town on 1 april 1912.


eden college founded in 1880. narendra narayan roy choudhury, landlord of baldah estate, built baldha garden in 1909. university of dhaka established in 1921. philip hartog became first vice-chancellor of university. ahsanullah school of engineering (now bangladesh university of engineering , technology) established in 1912 under substantial grants , patronage dhaka nawab family.
