biography

born in carmunnock, son of butcher raised in small village outside east kilbride, , educated @ rutherglen academy.


mccoll left school @ 16 take engineering apprenticeship weir pumps of cathcart, glasgow. after gaining city & guilds certificates @ lower , higher level, gained bsc degree in technology , business studies @ strathclyde university. returned weir pumps in 1978, studying next 3 years mba.


mccoll joined diamond power speciality ltd in 1981, engineering company supplying equipment power industry worldwide; during tenure studied part time master s degree in international accounting , finance. head hunted coopers & lybrand, in 1985 became consultant, working companies in financial difficulties needed guidance. in 1986 left coopers become self-employed company doctor , during made money through 2 successful turnarounds.


clyde blowers

in 1992 mccoll bought 29.9% of family-owned engineering company clyde blowers plc £1million, losing money on turnover of £4million, had full listing on london stock exchange. after taking private company , increasing holding 70% in 2001, on following 5 years clyde blowers bought 6 of 8 major competitors, , have 55% global market share of original core business. in may 2007, clyde blowers bought weir pumps weir group plc, same company mccoll started career at. in september 2008, mccoll led team enabled clyde blowers acquire entire fluid & power division of fortune 500 multi-industry company textron, in deal worth on $1 billion. clyde blowers presently consists of 85 companies in 27 different countries, employing 5,000 people around world, annual turnover in excess of £1.35 billion.

mccoll appointed officer of order of british empire (obe) in 2001 queen s birthday honours. mccoll won alumnus of year award strathclyde university in 1998, awarded honorary doctorate napier university in 2003, , honorary doctorate glasgow university in 2007. mccoll won entrepreneurial exchange entrepreneur of year award 1999/2000, , ernst & young master entrepreneur of year award 2001. in july 2005, mccoll awarded prince philip medal 2005 certificate of achievement outstanding contribution engineering industry. in may 2006, mccoll presented scottish international business achievement award princess royal.


personal life

mccoll , wife shona resident in monaco. have home outside glasgow, , mccoll keen car enthusiast both modern , classic cars.


mccoll supporter of scottish government s policy of independence scotland, in 2015 changed viewpoint stating decision s been made following 2014 referendum though supports idea of further tax devolution. member of scottish government s scottish council of economic advisers, , spends of spare time working on glasgow based welfare-to-work programme.
