tropical cyclone althea category 4 cyclone when hit coast 50 km north of magnetic island , townsville in north queensland on december 24, 1971. althea produced peak gust wind speeds between 123 , 145 miles per hour (197 , 233 km/h). 3 people died , property damage estimated @ a$115 million loss (1990 value). on magnetic island 90% of houses damaged or destroyed. in townsville houses lifted foundations , trees stripped of foliage. althea notable @ time, had struck major city.


although there dangerous storm surge associated tc althea (between 2.8 , 3.6 metres) little flooding occurred because cyclone made landfall on low tide. however, combination of storm surge , wave action demolished strand sea wall , houses in low-lying areas inundated 0.6 metres of water.
