physical makeup

the number of checkpoints , physical obstacles , uses , locations varies. while located restrict palestinian access israeli areas, of them not restrict interaction between israelis , palestinians, rather between palestinians , palestinians . organizations united nations office coordination of humanitarian affairs, track such developments have reported recent upward trend; increasing 376 in august 2005 528, of september 2006. of these, 83 checkpoints manned idf and/or border police , 445 unmanned checkpoints , obstacles.

there flying checkpoints unannounced spot-checks spontaneously erected period of time, on key transportation routes @ peak travelling times. in july, august , september 2006, flyings checkpoints used average of 165 times per week.

these elevated military towers monitor/control palestinian pedestrian , vehicular access.

anti-vehicle barriers

a series of 1 metre concrete blocks or mounds of rubble, dirt , rocks used obstruct palestinian vehicle access settlements or prevent bypassing of checkpoints when entering controlled access routes. there 50 block sites , 275 separate earth mounds in west bank. there 10 separate trenches in west bank making 31,000 metres of trenches. these placed prevent vehicle access.

road barriers

secures passage of israeli settlers on restricted roads. these fences impede palestinians traveling on major roads leading main cities. there 25 of these in west bank totalling 37,600 metres.

permit system

the permit system complex , applied differently region region. permit eases travel , reduces risk of being turned @ checkpoint. permits necessary crossing specific checkpoints, accessing jordan valley, closed area between green line , israeli west bank barrier , entering east jerusalem.

barrier gates

a barrier gate @ bil in.

allows restricted movement through west bank barrier palestinian lands , israel. permits required palestinians pass through gate. thirty-eight of seventy-three barrier gates open palestinians appropriate permits.
