martin luther king jr. avenue constructed in 1855 asylum avenue, when government hospital insane (later known st. elizabeths hospital) built on st. elizabeth s tract in district of columbia. renamed nichols avenue in 1879, in honor of st. elizabeths hospital superintendent charles henry nichols. renamed again slain civil rights leader martin luther king, jr. on january 15, 1971.


in 2003, district of columbia department of transportation (ddot) announced that, part of dc streetcar system, build 2.7 miles (4.3 km) anacostia line demonstration of streetcar technology in city. line planned begin @ bolling air force base, travel north along south capitol street anacostia metro station, along martin luther king jr. avenue se hope road se, , along csx railroad tracks minnesota avenue metro station. however, in october 2010 city scaled anacostia line, truncating northern end of line end @ anacostia metro station.


on march 4, 2011, ddot announced public meetings designed provide link between anacostia metro station , 11th street bridges (under construction of 2011) meet community concerns traffic impacts streetcar have on mlk ave, threats historic preservation in anacostia historic district, , terminating line @ anacostia gateway building @ intersection of mlk ave , hope road se. 11th street bridges designed carry streetcars on anacostia river, permitting anacostia line link rest of streetcar system.
