Trial 1987 grenade attack in the Sri Lankan Parliament

after arrest, ajith kumara, along 4 others, charged carrying out grenade attack. indicted on ten counts, including conspiracy commit murder of president j. r. jayawardene; , attempting commit murder of lalith athulathmudali. in court, state counsel palitha fernando claimed kumara member of janatha vimukthi peramuna (jvp), banned organization @ time, , jvp ordered attack result of president jayawardene’s decision deploy indian army in north , east of sri lanka. kumara held in maximum security welikada prison throughout trial.
on october 12, 1990, colombo high court @ bar delivered unanimous verdict acquitting kumara, first accused, , m. jayasiri goonewardene, fifth accused, due lack of evidence. delivering verdict, high court judge ananda grero said prosecution had not proved charges beyond reasonable doubt. 3 other suspects had been acquitted on october 4. following discharge prison, kumara , goonewardene re-arrested, attorney general appealed decision.
during trails, defendants represented future minister susil premjayanth , diplomat mangala moonesinghe.
ajith kumara released on august 6, 1993. entered politics afterwards, becoming active member of jvp, had since been decriminalized. later became jvp politbureau member, pradeshiya sabha member , unsuccessful chief ministerial candidate of jvp 1999 sabaragamuva provincial council elections.
