the cb900f powered de-tuned honda cbr900rr engine, developed tadao baba, 1 of honda s large project leaders. motor transversely mounted, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected 919 cc (56.1 cu in) in-line four-stroke, four-cylinder dohc engine produces around 100 hp (75 kw). engine has cast camshafts , pistons instead of more expensive forged versions found on cbr929 , later. greater midrange torque, cb900f s camshaft lift lower, , compression lowered. 4 36 mm (1.4 in) fuel-injection throttle bodies take place of cbr900rr s 38 mm (1.5 in) carburetors. redline 9500 rpm. bike has cable-actuated clutch, six-speed transmission, , chain final drive.


a steel, square-tube backbone frame supports stressed member engine. in front, cartridge fork (adjustable beginning in 2004) guides wheel, while single showa shock, adjustable preload (and rebound damping beginning in 2004) connects aluminum swingarm , carries weight in back. brakes dual-disc in front , single-disc in rear.


instrumentation consists of analog speedometer , tachometer , basic indicator lamps, incorporated under tinted window, , single tripmeter. while equipped centerstand, california models did not have room 1 due additional emissions control equipment.


the rake 25°, trail 98 mm (3.9 in), wheelbase 1,460 mm (57 in), , seat height 800 mm (31 in). has tested dry weight (minus fuel only) of 206 kg (455 lb) , tested wet weight of 220 kg (485 lb). chain drive 530 chain stock gearing of 16 tooth front , 43 tooth rear sprockets.


a 599 cc (36.6 cu in) carburetted version exists in form of cb600f, known hornet 600 in europe , 599 in north america.


performance

quarter-mile performance 11.18 seconds @ 194.2 km/h (120.7 mph) tested motorcyclist, while cycle world measured 10.92 seconds @ 198 km/h (123 mph). having lowest weight in class , power-to-weight ratio, stands in comparison bikes greater output yamaha fz1, , wide, high handlebars ease quick turning , make cornering enjoyable. suspension of versions criticized, after upgrade adjustable fork, complaints died down. cycle world saw 919 practical solution real-world problem of imperfect roads , traffic, rather mere compromise between sportbike , commuter or touring ride.
