in original 1925 plan u.s. highway system, us 9 designated along west bank of hudson river new jersey line albany, utilizing then-ny 10. north of albany, us 9 followed ny 6 canada. lone deviation elizabethtown keeseville, us 9 routed on unnumbered highway east instead. ny 6 east of hudson (up rensselaer) , further extension glens falls via troy, mechanicville, , schuylerville designated us 109. alignment of us 9 within new york remained unchanged in final system alignment approved on november 11, 1926. however, when us 9 commissioned in new york in 1927, us 109 designation had been dropped , signed instead us 9e, waterford. segment on west bank of hudson new jersey waterford redesignated us 9w, split routes meeting in waterford. there, unsuffixed us 9 began (still along ny 6) , went canadian border via rouses point planned in 1925.
the former routing of ny 6 between elizabethtown , keeseville, bypassed us 9, became ny 9w @ time. shorter, more inland alternate route between albany , round lake designated ny 9c sometime in late 1920s. in 1930 renumbering of state highways in new york, e suffix dropped of us 9e south of east greenbush—making part of us 9—while us 9w truncated southward end in albany. @ same time, us 9 realigned between albany , round lake use had been ny 9c. waterford–mechanicville portion of us 9 s former routing , segment of us 9e between east greenbush , waterford became part of extended us 4. remainder of old riverside route south of waterford became part of ny 32 while round lake–mechanicville segment of old us 9 became part of ny 67.
