it during period of intense fame , tabloid scrutiny longtime member , major innovator in band s sound russell senior decided leave band, saying, wasn t creatively rewarding in pulp anymore . band due begin working on new album in late 1996. however, cocker having difficulty celebrity lifestyle, battling cocaine addiction , break-up of long-term relationship. when band came begin work on next album, had 1 song – aged . creative inertia meant band took on year finish next record. indeed, cocker s disillusionment long-desired wish fame made of subject matter of hardcore, released in march 1998. album took darker , more challenging tone of different class , lyrical topics – pornography (the title track), fame ( glory days ) , after effects of drugs ( fear ) – dealt more earnestly on previous records. in 1998, pulp collaborated patrick doyle on song friend soundtrack film great expectations. song used in adult swim cartoon venture bros. season 4 finale operation: p.r.o.m.


pulp spent few years in wilderness before reappearing in 2001 new album, love life. extended period between release of hardcore , love life partly attributed having recorded songs comprise album , being dissatisfied results. subsequent interviews suggested interpersonal , artistic differences, including managing fallout of britpop/different class era. singer/songwriter scott walker agreed produce record , symbolised new phase in pulp s development. new effort fell short of expectations , pulp s last.


pulp subsequently undertook tour of national parks in uk, playing show far north elgin in scotland. richard hawley, sheffield-based singer/songwriter, present on various dates on tour. later described pink feather boas , glamour great , brilliant. trying find glamour among shit , loved . in 2002 band announced leaving label, island. greatest hits package released: hits, 1 new track. unclear whether band s decision or released satisfy contractual agreements. music festival, auto, organised (held @ rotherham s magna centre) played last gig before embarking on 9-year hiatus.
