the 956 made debut @ silverstone 6 hour race, second round of world championship makes jacky ickx , derek bell driving factory. after missing following round @ 1000 km nürburgring developmental reasons, ickx/bell unit reappeared @ 24 hours of le mans. led race entire 24 hours, taking overall win - third win together. had won in 1981 porsche 936 had used version of 956 engine, car had started number 1. 2 other factory 956 followed them, 3 factory porsches finished 1-2-3 in order of starting numbers.


boosted success, porsche sold customer versions of 956 privateer teams such joest racing, obermaier racing, john fitzpatrick racing, richard lloyd racing, kremer racing , brun motorsport raced them independently of factory.



the overall all-time lap record demanding 20 km nürburgring-nordschleife circuit in eifel mountains achieved during qualifying session 1983 1000km of nürburgring, stefan bellof, drove 956 around in 6 minutes 11.13 seconds, @ average speed of 202 km/h (126 mph). race lap record held same bellof, during 1983 1000 km nürburgring, lap being clocked @ 6:25.91.


at 1985 1000 km of spa, bellof died after colliding jacky ickx s newer 962. safety concerns on 956 led eventual end teams upgraded safer 962. 956 s last win come courtesy of joest racing in last race of 1986 wec season, in turned out 956 s last race.
