granite rock formations occupy majority of municipality schist rocks can found in zones in northwest of municipality. on southeast, clay can found in stream bed of ave, vizela , selho rivers.

the municipality delimited @ north senhora monte (senhora hill), @ northwest hills of falperra, sameiro, outeiro , penedice. south penha hill height of 613 meters, highest point of municipality.
guimarães part of drainage basin of ave river divides municipality in half. ave river has tributaries vizela river, torto river, febras river , inside city, selho river, couros river , santa lúzia stream.
climate
guimarães located in valley , surrounded hills, , because there distance sea, winter cold , rainy , summer hot , lightly humid. average annual temperature 14 °c.
fauna
there not diversity, specially in urban areas, municipality has species of cynegetic interest such as: red fox, wild boar, turtle dove, thrush, pigeon , red-legged partridge. in green areas of city, common species rodents, squirrels.
