the triskelion on front of wheel backwards. happened accident when transferring image onto wall; forgot reverse it, mirror image of symbol of mann.
a water-powered wheel used because isle of man not have supply of coal steam-powered pump.
water surrounding area – including number of local springs , streams – collected in cistern, above level of top of wheel. closed pipe connects cistern top of wheel; water flows tower inverted syphon. water falls pipe buckets (formed wooden slats on circumference) , makes wheel rotate in described reverse direction - pitchback wheel. crank has throw of 4 feet (1.2 m) , connects counterweight , long rod. rod runs along rod viaduct pumping shaft 8 feet (2.4 m) stroke converted t-rockers pumping action.
most of wheel , rod made of wood; however, key mechanical parts metal provide tension , bearing surfaces. rod has attached wheels @ intervals permit stroke s motion minimal friction.
