candidates

the list of candidates officially finalised on 14 may. there eighteen candidates:


the union popular movement chose finance minister christine lagarde (who had never been member of parliament) candidate in april 2011. lagarde, however, subsequently became managing director of international monetary fund, , in november party chose frédéric lefebvre, secretary of state commerce, replace candidate.


the socialist party chose corinne narassiguin, resident of new york city. deputy (suppléant) yves alavo, resident of montreal. europe Écologie–the greens had chosen rémi piet, sabrina feddal deputy (suppléante). piet, resident of miami, teaches international relations @ university of miami. in january 2012, europe Écologie–the greens , socialist party merged efforts create new ticket featuring corinne narassiguin (socialist) , cyrille giraud (eelv), resident of montreal.


the democratic movement chose carole granade. resident of san francisco, former director of city s french american chamber of commerce.


the left front, includes french communist party, chose céline clément, senior lecturer in psychology @ university of strasbourg. had several years experience working in quebec, , canadian partner. deputy (suppléant) thomas collombat, professor of quebec studies @ western washington university.


the national front chose claire savreux.


the centre-right radical party , centrist republican, ecologist , social alliance jointly chose philippe manteau candidate. endorsed liberal democratic party. aurélia palvel-marmont deputy (suppléante).


the centre-left radical party of left chose stéphanie bowring, long-term resident of saint-pierre-et-miquelon, , dual citizen of france , canada. jean lachaud deputy (suppléant).


the pirate party chose raphaël clayette, olivier henebelle deputy (suppléant).


solidarity , progress, french branch of larouche movement, represented karel vereycken, dominique revault-d allonnes deputy. vereycken described himself friend of jacques cheminade , lyndon larouche.


julien balkany, resident of new york city , member of union popular movement, stood dissident candidate, having failed obtain party s endorsement. françois lubrina deputy (suppléant).


gérard michon, resident of united states 31 years serving fourth mandate @ assembly of french citizens abroad, constituency including san francisco, stood independent candidate. despite being member of union popular movement, stood against party s endorsed candidate. marc cormier deputy (suppléant).


antoine treuille, businessman, president of french-american foundation, , long-term resident of united states, stood independent right-wing candidate. if elected, said sit union popular movement.


christophe navel independent candidate, presenting himself neither left nor right. matthieu deborde deputy (suppléant).


mike remondeau independent candidate. 31-year-old resident of tampa, florida, studying master s degree in political sciences. called political movement circle of north americans (cercle des nord-américains), , stood on platform of ideological laïcité , , common cultural identity french residents in north america. christian routier deputy.


emile servan-schreiber, christian déséglise deputy, independent centre-right candidate.


the other independent candidates were: louis le guyader (with claire le guyader deputy); jean-michel vernochet (with lieu nguyen deputy); , rob temene (with betty millet deputy).


campaign

due in part sheer size of constituency, candidates barely campaigned @ all, while others made every effort travel around united states , canada , mobilise scattered voters . los angeles, sizable french expatriate population, focal point some. among issues of concern voters education (access french schools children) , retirement pensions.


on 23 may, france 24 organised televised debate in new york city 8 candidates deemed active in terms of campaign : corinne narassiguin (socialist), frédéric lefebvre (ump) carole granade (modem), philippe manteau (ares), julien balkany (dissident ump), gérard michon (dissident ump), antoine treuille (misc. right), , emile servan-schreiber (misc. right). 7 of invited candidates took part; lefebvre indicated did not wish to.


results

turnout in first round low: 22.5% in canada , 18.9% in united states. mainstream right divided (four dissident candidates standing against ump-endorsed candidate), socialist corinne narassiguin obtained comfortable lead in first round, in both countries of constituency.


in second round, narassiguin won comfortable margin, in described incredible win left. constituency had been deemed safe seat right. commentators in libération pointed narassiguin s strong , active campaign, , suggested rightwing voters had rejected ump candidate frédéric lefebvre, spoke little english , perceived knowing little north america.




subsequent invalidation

in february 2013, election of corinne narassiguin annulled constitutional council, due irregularities in funding of electoral campaigns. barred standing public office period of 1 year. defeated candidates antoine treuille , emile servan-schreiber barred standing public office year, same reason.
